What is a VPN leak?

A VPN leak is when traffic that should travel through the VPN tunnel — DNS queries, WebRTC peer connections, IPv6 packets — escapes around it and reveals your real network identity.

DNS leaks explained

If your operating system keeps using your ISP's DNS resolver after the VPN connects, websites you visit are still observable to your ISP even though the rest of the traffic is encrypted.

WebRTC privacy basics

Browsers use WebRTC for real-time video and voice. To find the best path, it can enumerate your IP addresses — including local ones — and expose them to any page that asks.

IPv6 exposure

Many VPNs only tunnel IPv4. If your network has working IPv6, traffic can quietly route outside the tunnel. Enable IPv6 leak protection in your VPN client or disable IPv6 at the OS level.
